I have a question for everyone - who is your favorite "celebrity" martial artist and why? I have a couple, but I'd like to hear from others first...

Welcome! Judo is a fun sport; I took some classes for a couple of years a looonnnnggg time ago. Sadly, I don't remember the details (instructor, school, etc), but I do remember a few of the throws.

Hmmm, maybe I can make a FitClip or post some pics to show you. It's actually a really good exercise for balance & core as well as hips, thighs and glutes. Plus, I do it in between the punch combos with weights to give the arms a break while working the legs.

A little too much for my budget of $0... :( Fortunately, they do have a bunch of small weights of 3,4,5,8 lbs and we do a whole series of punching combos with those. Fires up the arms and shoulders!! Using tension bands for a kick combo series, too... Yes, you definitely have to do those in smaller doses!

i just got the weighted gloves at my gym..2-4lbs per hand. They are awesome to add to the class. I only use them for about 15mins or so, as it is still to difficult for the class to make it through any longer.

Hey, that works for me! In fact, I've "retired" from teaching at the karate school and I'm now keeping my "instructor's edge" by teaching a cardio kickboxing class at my gym. I'm big on form, too and for me that comes from the whole traditional side where form comes first. I love the whole self-defense and weapons aspects, I miss that badly.

Some quick research I did came up with "Vovinam", or literally translated "Vietnamese martial art". It has a pretty interesting history ( http://www.vovinam.com/his/en1912.htm ) and it's likely that the southern Vietnamese soldiers would learn these techniques since the art's founder moved to South Vietnam to escape communism. One thing I like about this art is that it is a relatively modern eclectic art based on the traditional arts of various Vietnamese cultures (heavily Chinese). Sounds like it would be a fun project for you and your wife to pursue together - you could satisfy your wish to learn more about martial arts and you could study a little bit of your wife's culture at the same time. Win-win!
